Curiosity Killed the Cat's Interest

If it seems like I have been rejecting this blog, you should see my RSS feeds. I just deleted 2,166 of them, dating only as far back at 2/11. That is just from one service. I still have four other services to check. My podcasts are not nearly as far behind. What helps with them is while I am at work I will pop in some headphones and listen. It also helps that I only subscribe to two podcasts, The Newshour and TwiT.TV. My news feeds are a result of “kid in a candy store” tactics to subscribing. When I subscribe, and the site breaks the feed down into “sub”feeds, I can’t help but choose everything instead of what I am most interested in. I stress most because I am interested in everything I sign up for, but that is because of the general curiosity of wanting to know more about (insert subject here). I've allowed the kid to take so much candy that now he is all hoped up on sugar and has found his way over to the china shop.

The problem with getting over 2,500 updates, all of my newsgroups combined, in a 5-6 week span is it is overwhelming. I got so overwhelmed that it turned into disinterest. I looked at my inbox of newsfeeds and there is so much there that I did't even know where to start, so then I told myself that I'd go through it tomorrow. But of course all tomorrow brings is X*(number of skipped days) as much for me to sort through. RSS feeds are supposed to make getting news more convenient as you don’t have to do anything short signing up for the subscription in the first place. It is like the sitcom dog that goes out and gets your newspaper for you. I managed to train my dog to collect every newspaper on the block, because they each happen to be a little different, but now I look at the pile at my front door and don’t even know where to start.

On a side note, I am signing up for yet more newsgroups as I have discovered holes in my coverage. I suppose this post, in the end, is my admittance to a problem. I am an RSS addict.

Can you have a second side note? Either way, I wanted to make it aware that I did not intend on this entry being entirely about RSS feeds, it was meant to be an anecdote to what I wanted to talk about. Instead it went on so long that it reached the point where I liked where it was going so I kept rolling with it. There will be another update shortly, something that is actually commentary to articles I have read in mentioned newsgroups, and not just me talking about how great it is that a man can set his computer to shower him in news.
